Daddy’s Legacy
Daddy's Legacy
like coffee laced with whipping
cream, his skin it was so fair.
Above his lips below his nose his
moustache did stand out,
all neatly groomed and trimmed it
was without a minute’s doubt.
He was long and lean and lanky, he
was handsome as could be.
He always tamed the hats he wore
with creases A to Z.
His khakis creased and starched from
waist to spit-shined shoes,
all bathed and dressed and smelling
good he’s ready for some blues.
Daddy loved and cherished Mama, she
was his all and all
He showed
her his devotion when he called her “Baby Doll”.
He always
tried to snuggle at the end of every day
It did us
kids a world of good to see our dad that way.
Daddy loved us kids a lot, we knew that from the start.
The attention he provided us came
from deep within his heart.
1975
Six feet tall with mocha skin and
wise beyond his years,
he left this world in ’88 I cried a
many tears.
I wiped my face I dried my tears my
dad’s life was over.
He lived his life he gave his best,
And, now he’s with Jehovah.
Now that Daddy’s gone I know the
lessons that he left,
everything he taught me makes me be
my better self.
His legacy is simple;
it is awesome
with its power,
to live and love to sing and dance
and
to embrace the hour.

Music: My Muse
Have
you ever had a song or a tune stuck in your
head that won’t go away? I woke up this morning to the sad news that
Aretha Franklin had passed earlier.
From
that moment on Aretha’s songs and music were stuck in my head and they wouldn’t go away.
Every step I took,
every move I made, Aretha’s
music was there. “Respect” skipped merrily through parks and playgrounds of my cluttered
brain. “I Say A Little Prayer” danced happily on top of my overcrowded to-do-lists…
in my head.
Most
of the time, I can only stop the music stuck in my head by playing the tune over and over until I’ve overdosed on it. Today CNN
performed the repetition so I didn’t need to go digging for my music.
Do
you know Aretha Franklin? Do you like her music? I do. I love, love, love me
some Aretha Franklin music.
What I
love most is Aretha’s rendition of a
song. It mesmerizes me. It holds me captive, unable to break away. The
melodious rise and fall of her voice is spellbinding! Her clear throaty sound
reaches way deep down inside my
soul. I’m a willing prisoner to the heavenly
sound of her words and music.
"Yea, oh yea - only Aretha . . ."
The journey she takes with her voice from low to high octave ending with that final burst of sweet-sounding deliciousness ... brings shivers of utter and complete joy to these untrained but adoring ears of mine.
Her voice, her words, her delivery, and her music are a recipe for sensual musical bliss. The melody and timing has my body moving along to the beat rhythmically. I’m swaying back and forth and side to side. I’m totally hooked!
I close my eyes and my mind wanders back-in-the-day. I’m immediately transported to a time and place when all was right with the world.
From song to song, beginning to end, is a soul soothing lullaby. It’s a perfect combination of vocal excellence and music long forgotten. It’s Classic!

Fleeting Moments
You're combing your hair, washing your hands, dishes,
clothes, etc. when a thought crosses your mind. There's something else -
important - you remember you need to do.
However, you have a few more strokes of the comb to go, a bit more silverware in the bottom of the sink, or a shirt or two more to remove from the dryer.
You’re thinking, I'll just finish this then I'll "do that other important thing."
Your hair is done, or the trash has been taken where it belongs.
Now, I'll go . . .
…What? What was it I was going to do?
That fleeting thought from mere moments ago, it's gone.
Geeeeezzee!!!
Go figure.
Have
you ever had fleeting moments? When was the last time you had one? What was it
about, do you remember?

How I Got My Mister to Call Me Sweetie
PaPa
~dellgirl~ answered my Good Morning call today (he’s working out of town) with,
“Hey Baby, what’s up?” That brought an inner smile reminding me how that came
about.
My Photo - dellgirl
We’ve been married 48 years now. For many
years, I sweetly called my husband “Tiger”. Sometimes I called him “Sugar-Bear”. Why did I do that?
I did it
because it did my heart a lot of good to hear my own daddy refer to my Mama as, “Baby Girl” or “Baby Doll” when we
were growing up. I remembered that, and adopted the practice of calling my
husband something sweet and endearing.
He
always called me by my name, “Dell”. In the beginning I didn’t think much about
it and continued calling him by my special “pet names”. He continued calling me
by my name. This went on for years without my saying a word to him about it.
Sometime
during 2013 I stopped. “Click”, I turned off the sweet name button, getting old
and cranky I guess. I started calling him
by his name instead of those silly pet
names.
One
particular telephone conversation went something like this.
Husband:
“Hey Dell, how you doing? I just called to say hi and see if everything is
going okay.”
Me: “Oh,
hey Pete (made up name). I’m fine. How are you? Everything is okay here. No
problems to report.”
More talk,
a little chit-chat and stuff like that, then he interrupted me. He asked what
I’d called him. I told him I called him Pete. He then asked why I did that.
I
explained that since I am always Dell, he will now be Pete. Long story short, it took several months but,
he finally got it. Things have changed.
Now, he
lovingly calls me “Baby” or “Honey” at least twice every other day or so. Sometimes
he even says, “sweet-heart”. Go figure!
Boy,
marriage is truly a WIP, isn’t it?
