ICE - In Case of Emergency: Revisited

Apparently, this is a standard procedure all paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone.
ICE - 'In Case of Emergency' We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.

If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' -In Case of Emergency- Campaign.

The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell/mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' - In Case of Emergency.

The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose.

In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'

For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!

Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!

Please forward this. It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this. It really could save your life OR put a loved one's mind at rest.

ICE will speak for you when you are not able to
speak for yourself.

What Helps Keep Me Grounded

Sometimes I Need to Re-Focus

Photo © by ~dellgirl~

I’m on a roll, moving right along, getting things done then . . . BAMMM!

Stuff goes south in the blink-of-an eye, like a speeding race car. Things go downhill like a snowball rolling down a snow covered hill.

Stop! Take a deep breath. It’s time to re-focus!

Two of my favorite quotes that help when things go other than planned (or hoped for) come from the wonderful book, Who Moved My Cheese, by Spencer Johnson, M.D.

Who Moved My Cheese? by Spencer Johnson: 9780399147241 ...

These two little quotes help me re-focus and get grounded again.
  • Change Happens
    • They keep moving the cheese
  • Adapt To Change Quickly
    • The quicker you let go of old cheese,
    • The sooner you can enjoy new cheese
There you have it, my inspiration to re-focus and keep moving forward.

What are your thoughts? How do you re-focus after a setback? What inspires you? Tell us please, we’d love to hear all about it.

The TRUTH About Marriage

Marriage: Give & Take

The following words of wisdom were passed on to my brother and to me when we were in high school during the early 60s. These wise words were from our daddy, the late Hermise Mason Wilkins.

Daddy started by telling us to be sure to marry someone you really and truly love, someone you would still want to be married to when you’re both old, fat, and wrinkled. He said, “Make sure it’s REAL love, not any of that puppy love stuff.”

Daddy said to love them like you’re never going to be hurt, love them unconditionally. BUT, he cautioned us, “Never love nobody more than you love yourself.” He further explained the following to us.

When you marry give it all you’ve got, EVERY day. Some days it will be 50/50, you’ll give 50% and your spouse will give 50%. THIS is a GOOD day!

Some days you will have to give 60% because your spouse is only giving 40%.

Other days your spouse will only give 30% so you have to give 70%.

There will even be days when you’re giving 80% and your spouse is only giving 20%.

Wait! If you think that’s bad wait until you’re giving 90% and your spouse is giving only 10%.

It gets even more challenging than that. There’ll be days when your spouse is giving nothing-nada-zero-zilch - 0%. Then, you have to give 100%. GIVE IT!!!

From 50/50 to 0/100 give your marriage ALL you’ve got – ALL the time.

Then, if things don’t work out you will have done your part. Don’t let it be you that didn’t do all you could do in your marriage.

Daddy ended with, "Marriage is not always 50/50. Marriage might be 0/100 on any given day."

There you have, my daddy’s Wise Words of Wisdom concerning marriage. This was long before Teddy Pendergrass released his song “When Somebody Loves You Back”.

What are your thoughts on marriage? Did anyone give you marriage advice before you married? Who was it? What did they tell you? Do you have any marriage advice of your own to share? We'd love to hear it.

Nothing NEW Under The Sun

There Is Nothing NEW Under The Sun

If you think it…rest assured that someone else somewhere has thought the same thought. If you have a mind blowing “light-bulb-moment” and dream up an amazing new idea, just know that it has been dreamed-up before. If you write it, many others have written about it also.

Did you know? There is nothing new under the sun.

With that in mind, let’s address plagiarism which is more prevalent today because of ease of access via the internet. One simply needs to search for a topic and search engines quickly return thousands of results.  The problem of plagiarism enters the picture when one person copies those results and uses them for their own purposes.

How do we avoid plagiarism?

In order to avoid plagiarism, write your story or article from your head, not from research gathered from the internet. Chances are, you will find some of the same ideas you have, but your ideas will be in your own words. Still, it’s a slippery slope.

When you DO use information gathered searching the internet, you must credit your source. Indicate where you got the information from. If you fail to credit your source, you are guilty of plagiarism.

So, your job is to present your ideas in a way that is completely different from any information you gather through your research.

There is nothing new under the sun. But, no two people talk exactly alike, and they definitely do not write in the same writing style and voice. Write your pieces in your own unique style and voice

How do YOU write your articles? Do you write first? Do you research first? What is your article writing technique?

The Price

Those who truly appreciate things of value are willing to pay the price for them.

Those who will not pay the price are doomed to experience a never-ending frustration. Everything of value has a price. If there is something you wish to have or to accomplish, you must pay the price.

When you accept that the price must be paid, then it really doesn’t seem so bad. Most of the pain of paying the price is in overcoming your own resistance. As you become more gratefully and cheerfully willing pay the price -- whether that price be in money, time, or effort -- you naturally summon the resources that enable you to indeed pay that price and achieve whatever you desire.

When you’re willing to pay the price, you’ll find a way to pay the price. And when you’re able to pay the price, whatever you desire is yours.

How to Lock Your Car and Why

This an email I received from a friend:

Thieves Don't Break Your Windows Anymore

I locked my car. As I walked away I heard my car door unlock. I went back and locked my car again three times. Each time, as soon as I started to walk away, I would hear it unlock again!
Naturally alarmed, I looked around and there were two guys sitting in a car in the fire lane next to the store. They were obviously watching me intently, and there was no doubt they were somehow involved in this very weird situation.

I quickly chucked the errand I was on, jumped in my car and sped away. I went straight to the police  station, told them what had happened, and found out I was part of a new, and very successful, scheme being used to gain entry into cars. Two weeks later, my friend's son had a similar happening.

While traveling, my friend's son stopped at a roadside rest to use the bathroom. When he came out to his car less than 4-5 minutes later, someone had gotten into his car and stolen his cell phone, laptop computer, GPS navigator, briefcase......you name it.

He called the police and since there were no signs of his car being broken into, the police told him he had been a victim of the latest robbery tactic -- there is a device that robbers are using now to clone your security code when you lock your doors on your car using your key-chain locking device.

They sit a distance away and watch for their next victim.  They know you are going inside of the store, restaurant, or bathroom and that they now have a few minutes to steal and run.

The police officer said to manually lock your car door-by hitting the lock button inside the car -- that way if there is someone sitting in a parking lot watching for their next victim, it will not be you.

When you hit the lock button on your car upon exiting, it does not send the security code, but if you walk away and use the door lock on your key chain, it sends the code through the airwaves where it can be instantly stolen.  This is very real.

Be wisely aware of what you just read and please pass this note on. Look how many times we all lock our doors with our remote just to be sure we remembered to lock them -- and bingo, someone has our code...and whatever was in our car.

Hacked!

I have been Hacked!!!

DO NOT RESPOND to the email that I (dellgirl, Leona, etc) was mugged in Malaysia and urgently need money. It is a SCAM...perpetrated by hackers!

Thank you Lin for posting a comment about the strange email. I appreciate that so much. I've spent the past several days wondering how to let everyone know my email was Hacked!

Fortunately, I learned about it early enough to do something about it and correct the situation. Thanks to many friends and relatives who called, I heard almost immediately about the strange message.

Those who know me personally called to tell me I had been Hacked. They knew definitely-for-sure that I, dellgirl, Leona, etc., would not be in Malaysia without first having shouted out to them that I was going.

That said, I am not in Malaysia. I have not been mugged over there. So, do not send money to wherever the Hacker told you to send it.

Truth-be-told, I will gladly accept $2,800.00 if you have that kind of money to give away (laughing-out-really-LOUD-over here). If you still want to give me the money now that you know I am not hurt, let me know so I can come get it. Hahahaheeehee!

Seriously! The email that I was mugged in Malaysia and need money is a hoax, a scam, by Hackers!

Thanks to everyone for caring and for letting me know about the strange email.

Have you ever been scammed? Had your email hacked? Anything similar? What happened? What did you do? Any advice for others facing a similar situation?

Resources for Writers & Publishers

The reason I started my website and this blog (my first one) was to provide information and advice for would-be writers, authors, and publishers. Thanks to the dedication and diligence of my oldest son, that is done now.

The new page element on the right side-bar, labeled "The Writing & Publishing Resource", contains just some of that information. It is also possible to sign up for my newsletter there - I hope you will.

Please take some time to investigate the resources we provide. AND, do sign up for the newsletter.

I look forward to your feedback and comments.
