Raining Cats and Dogs

What is a Cliché?

I heard THAT!

You’re right, not many people give a hoot about Clichés. Okay, so I’ll just play around here all by myself and list a few of my frequently used Clichés. While I’m at, I’ll throw in some that I don’t use often.
So, what is a Cliché? Cliché (pronounced: klee-shay) is an unoriginal phrase or opinion that is overused to the point of losing its original meaning or effect. Clichés are even overused to the point of being uninspired or irritating. Sometimes they’re downright corny.

Let’s get started:

drunk as Cooter Brown
drunk as a skunk
dumb as a doorknob
dumb as a bag of rocks
crazy as a bessie bug
sick as a dog

Joan Merriam: Sick as a — dog? | TheUnion.com

raining cats and dogs
beat with an ugly stick
beauty's only skin deep but ugly’s to the bone
look like something the cat dragged in
more than one way to skin a cat
as plain as the nose on your face
cut off your nose to spite your face
sight for sore eyes
pull the wool over his eyes
hot as hell
hotter than 4 fat whores in a closet
going to hell in a handbasket
like a bat out of hell
so hungry I could eat a horse
hungry as a mangy stray dog
pulling my leg
costs an arm and a leg

  1. I imagine that some of these, such as raining cats and dogs, are almost universal in the English-speaking world, but I think that others are more regional -- perhaps, drunk as Cooter Brown, for example.

  2. I have been known to use a few of these - especially raining like cats and dogs and more than one way to skin a cat!

  3. I've heard of most of these but some not. And the some not I don't have a clue as to what they mean. I don't know what a bessie bug is or why it's crazy.

  4. Cliche, cliche... I found these cliches very interesting. Ironically, I know only a few of them. Perhaps, should learn all of them and use them:)

  5. Haven't heard of most of them or know what they mean. That would be a good research project. I actually don't remember if i ever use them to be honest. :)

  6. Fun! During cold weather, I have found myself saying, 'It's as cold as a mother-in-law's kiss.' I tend to say 'Pulling my leg' too. Have a beautiful and blessed weekend.

  7. Great picture!
I'm familiar with "raining cats and dogs" , but not with the other cliches in your post.
Anyway, these expressions enrich a language. I believe any language has cliches of its own, and speakers of the language enjoy using them in daily life.
