Knowing When to Walk Away

Things
that I used to do don’t come easily anymore. Painting a room was once a breeze,
I could paint one in a day.
My Photo
Hanging
wallpaper? Simple, remove the old, prepare the wall, mix the solution for the
new, hang it! Done by dinner!
Build
a bookshelf from scratch with hammer, saw, and nails – alone - Piece of cake. Shelf
finished, primed and painted, ready for use soon as the paint dries.
The
list goes on…a distant memory now of days and projects relegated to a special file
located in the far reaches of my mind.
Music,
my favorite being the kind that makes your feet move, your lips curl into a reminiscent
smile, causes your head keep time with it – to good music - makes you want to dance. I still dance; if only in my mind. Add
dancing to the list of things I used to do that don’t come easily anymore.

The other day I leaned against the washing machine, gazed intently at the blown-out light bulb, looked down at the floor, back up at the ceiling at the darkness.
Whew! That’s quite a distance from the floor to the
bulb. I turned to look for the
step-ladder. It must be in another room.
Too much trouble to go find it, come back, and finagle all this stuff around
to set the ladder up.
Instead,
I placed both hands flat on top of the washer, remembering the many times I had
placed my hands just-so, hopped on top of the washer and changed the bulb. It was a good thought. I let it remain so – a good thought.
One
last glance, up at the ceiling, down to the floor, I shook my head, “NO”!
I closed the door . . .
I closed the door . . .
This is my life
ReplyDeleteI appreciate what you said. This comment made me smile. Thank you.
DeleteSmart decision.
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting today, Christine. I appreciate the comment.
DeleteNow THAT is good thinking Dell Girl. I have learned... occasionally...to let common sense rule despite what I used to do. The ability we had when a lot younger would rare up and start arranging our thoughts into trying the same shortcuts again. It takes quite a woman or man to resist and as you out it so well, walk away. I have only hurt myself a few times in life and I generally learned to just "duit" the right way.
ReplyDeleteHey there, sweet Katie. I really appreciate your visit, thank you for coming by. I also thank you for the nice thoughtful comment. I hope you drop by again soon.
DeleteWe all go through these phases: we do things in our younger days, but when energy leaves us we have to do the right thing and walk away, as you say.
ReplyDeleteYou're so right, DUTA. We sure do. I'm happy that you took the time to check this out and leave a lovely comment. Thank you, I appreciate that.
DeleteI so know what you are feeling and thinking! Twenty-five years ago when I was diagnosed with MS my whole life changed. Little by little my independence has been eaten away. Everyday I have to think - should I try and do this? It's a hard decision to make but you made the right call as eveyone learns as they get older or a disability makes the decision for them. I have learned to enjoy new things and move on from the past memories. I would have never started a blog or do craft projects but find that along with these and so many other things I so enjoy just as much a I did my physical activities. God closed one door but opened up so many more! Have a great day!
ReplyDeleteThank you for stopping by to visit and for reading this, Nancy. I really appreciate that, and I’m especially glad that you made it a point to leave such a nice comment.
DeleteYou built a bookshelf in a day? Wow!
ReplyDeleteI don’t want to think about the wallpapering we did. Yikes! But, yes... I am walking away more these days. I’ve hurt myself too much by doing what I really can’t anymore.
Hey there, Kay. Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to stop by. Your visits always brighten my day. Thanks especially for the nice comment.
Deleteexcellent....

Thank you so much for visiting, Tanza. I really appreciate that you took the time to comment.
DeleteRecently I was putting in a new kitchen sink. I have a large garbage disposal. I got the new sink in then got under the sink to put the disposal on. It came out easy. Getting it back up and on was a different story. I fought it for about 15 minutes before hollering for my son to come help me. He came in, squatted down, stuck his arms straight out, and popped the disposal up like it was made of styrofoam. Yep, I'm getting old.
ReplyDeleteWow Mike, what an ordeal! I hear ya' though...been there done that! Thank you so much for visiting. I really appreciate that you took the time to comment. I am thankful for that.
