Morning Person or Night Owl

Are You a Morning Person or a Night Owl?

I'm NOT a morning person, my husband is.  He wakes up at the crack of dawn yakking and talking, laughing and the whole 9 yards.  He pops out of bed like a Jack-in-the-Box all bright eyed and bushy-tailed and moves through his morning like the Energizer Bunny.  (((Sigh!)))

Not being a morning person has its pros and cons, and it works for me.  Once the people in my life got it, I don't have to fake it. I don’t have to pretend to be something I’m not.  I can be as grumpy and ugly-faced as all ‘git-out’ and nobody holds it against me.  They nod at me and keep right on moving.

The husband finally understands this perplexing quirk of mine and treats me accordingly, like a piece of furniture.  If I happen to be standing in a spot where he wants to be, he goes around me.

If he needs to talk with me about something important, he makes it short quick and to the point.  He also says ‘excuse me and if you don't mind’ throughout the explanation of whatever it is he needs or wants me to do today.

The adult children in my life are quite another matter.  They have either taken on my persona or their daddy's.  I surmised early-on that whichever way they ended up, it would be okay. As long as everybody knows their boundaries with everyone else, and stays on their own side of the fence.

I tried being a morning person for a while, way way back in the day. It worked for a while when the kids were young. It was fun getting up early and doing things with them. After they grew up, being a morning person didn’t work well for me anymore. I am NOT a morning person! I’m a total night owl…sometimes.

So there you have it, my random rant for the day.

Which type of person are you? Are you a morning person?  Or, are you a night owl? Do you have family members who are one or the other? Which is it? Let us know in the comments. We’d love to hear from you.

  2. I am a morning person. I think I always have been. Even young, I wanted to head on into bed at an hour that kept me from seeing the nightly news. It was so hard to stay up for Johnny I mostly didn't. Don't have, never did, a TV in the bedroom. Counter productive and too...I have always been a 12 hr. rotating shift worker. When you have to sleep, you do. When on days, I rose at 3:30 am and was at HQ by 4:35 am. When on mids, the exact same hours only in the afternoon instead of the morning. Meant going to bed at 8:45 am. on mids, and it meant meant 8:45 pm on days. Regimented tough times, but you do what you have to.

    1. I hear you, Katie. Work hours like that definitely sets waking and sleeping time. I had relatives and friends that worked those kinds of hours and they were the same as you.

I also got up early when I needed to. I enjoyed it.

It's good to see you. Thank you for coming by and for taking time to leave a great comment.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

  3. Morning person, definitely. That's when my mind is most sharp, and the mornings are my "creative time", on the blog and otherwise. Most days I get up by 2:00 AM, sometimes earlier. It's quiet and there are no disturbances to worry about. It's also handy for dealing with the heat of summer. When I get up I can open the windows and let the cool air in for several hours; then, when the sun rises (boo!), I just close everything up. Most days the place doesn't heat up too badly.

Of course I have to go to bed pretty early, but that's no loss since by evening I'm pretty much brain-fried anyway.

I agree with you about finding a time when it is quiet and there are no disturbances to worry about. That makes life more productive.

  4. I seem to work best on eight hours sleep, and on waking the first thing I turn to is a nice cup of tea, it just starts the day off well. Now I'm retired my day can start a little later and no rushing to be out the door by a certain time … unless I have to of course!

    All the best Jan

    1. Hi Lin. I'm happy to see your smiling face today. My mister and I are exact opposites of you and your hubby. He is the early riser and I need a bit more sleep.
