Gadget Girl

Gadgets Widgets & Doodads

I love gadgets, gizmos, and devices of every kind. I am a self-professed gadget girl, no ifs ands or buts about it. I have a million of them. Well, nine hundred thousand of them anyway. My grown kids are gadget people.

My daddy was a gadget man. He loved whatchamacallits of all kinds even way back then, even created a few of his own. I often wonder how he would have liked tablets, computers, hard drives and such.

I know he would not have cared at all about cell phones because he wasn’t much of a talker. He definitely was not a telephone talker. So, I could just imagine him opting not to even get a cell phone.

With that in mind, what kind of gadgets do I imagine Daddy liking? He would have ABSOLUTELY LOVED “remote controls.” I am as sure of this as I am sure that the sun rises in the east.

Back in the late 50s and into the 60s we had to turn the lights on in a room by pulling a string hanging from the light in the ceiling. Daddy connected a long, long, longer string to the light in his and Mama’s room. He then tied the string to the headboard on his side of their bed. Whenever he wanted the lights on or off, he only had to reach up from his comfortable place in bed and tug on the string.

 Lights on!

That’s how I know daddy would have loved remote controls.

Do you love gadgets? Which of your devices or gadgets do you like best? Does anyone else you know love gadgets? What are your thoughts on gadgets and gizmos?

  1. I don't think I am really a gadget person, but we all like our things. A remote garage door opener great to have. When our older one gives up the ghost, I will likely want to replace it sooner than later. Sue loves cutesy things but not necessarily gadgets as such. When she saw cat bed caves at the pet store, she pretty well had to have it although I figured Lacey wouldn't likely use it. She doesn't.

  2. LOL! I remember having to turn a few lights on with that string too, way back in the day, and having to stand up on chairs to do it. I'm not a gadget girl, but my 35 year old son is. I don't do a lot of stuff on my cell phone, but I do care about my computer and tv doing what they're supposed to do.(lol) Hugs, RO

  5. Heathkit. Remember the name? No? They are long gone but I built a lot of their stuff. The biggest thing I built was a 25" TV. Big back in the day. And it had a remote. I soldered all the resistors, capacitors, and inductors to the circuit boards. And it worked, for many years.

  10. The computer is for me the one and only gadget. As I advance in age, I tend to look for the simpler things in life, and not spend time, money' and my dcreasing energy on all kinds of innovations.
I think men seem to be more interested in gadgets than women.

  11. I wonder if your Dad would've liked The Clapper? Judging from what he did rig up it sounds like something he would've wished he invented. I am definitely a gadget person but I have to say that I liked talking on cell phones when they were still relatively new. Getting clear and precise voice service is a thing of the past now with texting so I tend to avoid talking on them. Most of it sounds like underwater conversations. Meh! Good post. Enjoyed it.

  12. The light control string was a pretty clever idea. I keep a long cardboard tube (one of those kind you get in the middle of a roll of wrapping paper) that's just long enough to reach the light switch, so I can turn the lights on and off without getting out of bed. The ultimate in low-tech decadence.

I'm not much into gadgets aside from that. I have a cell phone, but it's just for if my car breaks down.

  13. These days there seems to be a gadget for everything.
I think some folks are heavily into gadgets but not me …

    All the best Jan
