I Hate Summer

I absolutely loved summer… when I was a kid. Summer time meant going barefoot, playing in the water sprinkler, roaming back and forth between Aunt Doris’ house (two doors over) and our house, playing outside ALL DAY long, and playing PERIOD.

I was the oldest kid and only girl in our little 3-house neighborhood. So, needless to say, I was a tomboy. We played cowboys & Indians, cops & robbers, climbing trees, jumping off the porch to see who could jump the farthest, riding stick horses chasing chickens pretending they were horses we were rounding up, and playing all the “balls” – baseball, basketball, & football.

So much fun in the summer! There were only two problems, getting up way too early going outside to play before Mama woke up. And, staying out playing too long after she’d called us to come inside for the night. We guaranteed ourselves two “whoopins” a day. Those things remained constant though, being hard-headed and getting two good butt whoopins every day – in the summer. Summer was still fun!

That was then, now I hate summer.

Why? It’s too hot, can’t go barefoot, can’t play in water sprinklers hair turns to a ‘fro’, and definitely can’t play the games we used to play. The only thing I can do with a ball now is toss or roll it to the grandbaby. The mere thought of running, kicking, bouncing, or even throwing a ball makes my whole body hurt. Oh lawdy!

So, what’s the real reason I hate summer? It’s too HOT!

What about you, do you love or hate summer? What is your favorite season? Why is this your favorite season?

Blessings my friend....
Who says you cant walk barefoot, play cowboys and Indians climb trees, jump off the porch to see who could jump the farthest, ride stick horses, chase chickens pretending they are horses you are rounding up, play baseball, basketball, & football. What laws dictates that you are not premitted? who clipped your wings from experiencing joy unemcumbered? Sure its beastly hot, and i agree it can be miserable, but why be? It is after all a choice. You can't do anything about sweltering, muggy madness but you can certainly do everything and anything about how you experience it.

Give yourself permission to access that childlike joyfulness and be barefoot and carefree. Happiness is a choice sistah everything else is just par for the course.

Peace....have a willful and joy filled weekend.

interesting question since it's now 105 degrees where I live but I'm in Iceland where it's freezing when the wind blows and the temps are around 40-50. I love the sun and feeling my bones warm up...lol!

I used to be like you described. And certainly I loved summertime. I remember the joy of the last day of school..the first week after school let out and the lazy times as well as the times when I went with a girlfriend or by myself all over town or even the dirt roads out of it.

But now..hot hot hot. Sweaty and sticky. My favorite times are spring and fall when it's not too hot..not too cold.

Every summer, I ran all over our Northend, Detroit neighborhood when I was really little. I ran around barefoot in the alley behind our house, we jumped off the porch until we were exhausted, we stalked the cart pushing junk man, screaming, "junk-man, junk-man run fo yo life!", we made mud pies until nightfall and we'd wade in the Swim-mobile when it came to our street. Sometimes, me and my best friend would get to go back outside after dark when our grandmothers watered their lawns. Our favorite thing to do was performing for the John R. bus as it passed by the house. So, as you can imagine I loved all my summers as a kid.

Now, I HATE SUMMER...IT'S TOOOOO HOT!

All is fine here, healthy, happy and enjoying the grandchildren. I'll be back now that I found you again. Take care dear and God bless!
