April

Did you know that April starts on the same day of the week as July every year, and the same day of the week as January in leap years? Something else I didn’t know is that April ends on the same day of the week as December every year.

April is National Poetry Month, a celebration of poetry. It was first introduced in 1996 by the Academy of American Poets as a way to increase awareness and appreciation of poetry in the United States.

April 1st was also April Fool’s Day, and I’m not sure if the Academy of American Poets realized that when they introduced National Poetry Month back in 1996, but it’s the kind of irony that poets would appreciate.

April 1st brought thoughts of spring what with trees and flowers blooming all over and birds chirping and singing outside my bedroom window early every morning.

The first day of spring is one thing, and the first spring day is another.

It seems like spring here already. It’s not too hot, too cold, too rainy, too sunny, too dry, or too wet -- it’s just perfect -- for me anyway. So I call it springtime, whether it’s officially spring or not.

One thing’s for sure, I’d better enjoy these perfectly beautiful days while they last because it’ll be over before I know it.

What is it like in your part of the country? I see some people still have snow. Is that you? Do you like it? Or are you getting a touch of spring?

  3. Hi Leona! Oh it's so nice to see you again. I still love April, even though I live in Hawaii now. I'm thinking flowers everywhere, light showers, the smell of rain. Ahhh...

Over here it's been sunny and warm although we're expecting a rainstorm moving in tonight. I hope you're not getting any wild weather in your neck of the woods.

  4. Hi Dell! Thanks for visiting my blog! Your weather sounds much nicer than ours! It started getting all springy and lovely, but then we had a HUGE snow over the weekend (almost a FOOT!). Now it's being very breezy and today it was 55. Not too bad, but certainly not warm-feeling outside (with that wind). My daffodils sure think it's spring though! THEY, at least, are beautiful!

  5. Hi Dell Girl !
Wassup ? I think April is a great month to be the official poetry month, too. I think the renewal process going on around us is a true incentive. I'm going to put up quite a bit of poetry on WordPress so be sure and take a look at my choices. I've started the first one AND I'm also going to be covering Worcestershire Castles and Manors as well. During my little hiatus, while I was deciding whether or not to go to WordPress or not, I did a lot of writing for print and sent out a ton of e-mails. Waiting for replies is always fun. I had missed writing for print publications so I'm really getting back into my the swing I started in 2001. Wish me luck !

P.S. Welcome back and I'm glad you put up a comment on my blogspot because I needed to refind your Starting Gate blog address. I can put it up now.

  6. When I think of April.... the 1st thing that comes to mind is Easter and 2nd is April fools day. Two holidays that are most certainly on the opposite ends of the spectrum.
